Dayton Soccer Season Ends In Spokane

SPOKANE - The Dayton Bulldog soccer team fell in the first playoff game against St. George, 9-0, in Spokane last Tuesday. The loss comes after the triumphant extra overtime win against Valley Christian last Thursday. Head coach DJ Frame said the Bulldogs gave up a few easy goals, which didn't help out in the long run.

"St. George is a good team," Frame said. "Our future looks bright and we started the process for next year."

Frame said the whole team played hard for the seniors' final game.

The Dayton soccer team's regular season was cut short one game because of heavy rain, but the team wasn't ready to relinquish a minute of playing time. So when the Bulldogs faced the Valley Christian Panthers last Thursday, they weren't ready to leave without a fight.

Head coach DJ Frame said the teams hadn't previously been matched up and both coaches agreed the teams would be well-matched.

And after one half of playing time, the teams' even matchup was clear.

The teams went blow-for- blow, ending the first half tied up at 1-1.

In the second half, both teams struggled to gain the lead. The Bulldogs were able to pull ahead by one point but the Panthers weren't ready to let go so easily.

During regulation game time, the Panthers went up for a penalty shot, but Bulldog keeper Willie Weppler was able to block the shot.

Unfortunately, one Bulldog player stepped over into the box and the Panthers were able to reshoot the goal, sneaking the ball past Weppler and tying the game up.

At the end of regulation play, the game was tied 2-2, sending the teams into overtime.

The game went into two short five minute halves of golden goal, where the first goal would end the game, but neither team was able to hit the net.

After the 10 minute overtime, the game went into a five-man shootout where each team was able to put five athletes up to shoot.

Both teams scored three goals each, moving the overtime through the rest of the bench.

After the shootout, each remaining player lined up to take a shot. The first team able to score an unanswered goal would claim the victory.

The next set was blocked by both teams but when the next two shooters took their place, only the Dayton athlete was able to score.

The final score after overtime and the shootout was 6-5, Dayton.

"Everybody played well," Frame said.

Frame specifically called out defender Samantha Harting who performed well, marking tight on the forward in her corner.

"(Harting) had a tremendous night of keeping him shut down even though they gave him a lot of opportunities," Frame said.

Frame also called out Malia Frame, saying she also had a standout night.
