Lady Cardinals Struggle Against Tigerscots

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg-Prescott girls bas- ketball team finished the four games in six days of the first week of the season one-up and three-down. But Mon- day's game at home against the Weston-McEwen Tiger- Scots left the Lady Cards hoping for more than the 46- 41 losing result.

The game started slowly with only seven points posted to the scoreboard in the first six minutes of play. The Carinals finally kicked things in gear with two Samantha Fedderson free throws and back-to-back lay-ups by point guard Chelsey Bran- nock. W-P led 9-6 at the first quarter break.

W-P's run continued into the second quarter as Brannock, Katy Hofer and Samantha Moss teamed up for eight unanswered WP points building the lead to nine at 17-8. But that lead evapo- rated entirely in the next three minutes.

Taryn Coffman and Keegan Shepard scored con- secutive baskets in the key. Then Marlene Bodmer sank two free throws to cut the lead to 17-14. Bodmer equalized the score on the next trip down the court when she completed a basket-and-foul 3-point play.

W- P's Stacia Deal stemmed the tide with a jumper, but the damage had been done. WP would never hold a lead larger than three points for the rest of the game.

W-P trailed most of the second half. The TigerScots retook the lead for the first time since 4-3, when Molly von Borstel completed a 3-point play early in the third quarter. W-P held a 1-point advantage entering the fourth, but a TigerScot 7-0 run helped out by four TigerScot offensive rebounds put the Cardinals into 40-34 hole. Despite numerous layup chances, W-P couldn't convert and overcome the deficit down the stretch. The TigerScots finished the game by hitting on three free throws in six attempts in just under seven seconds of game clock to ice it.

Krystal Harris registered a quiet double-double for the Cards. The versatile senior scored 11 points to go with 11 rebounds. Brannock fin- ished with nine points and six rebounds.

Saturday's game at Asotin marked the first victory of the season for the Cards. W-P broke a 29-29 halftime tie, by outscoring the Panthers 28- 22 in the second half. Harris' 19 points including 7-of-10 from the free throw line paced the Lady Cards. Deal, with two 3-pointer, added 11.
