Prescott Jamboree: Coaches Like What They See

PRESCOTT - A chilly March breeze at the Tigers' ball fields wouldn't let spec­tators shake off their winter blues completely. But in ev­ery other respect, Saturday's sun-drenched jamboree was the perfect start of the spring sports season for the Touchet Valley teams, their coaches said.

"It was a productive day," said Dustin Snedigar, the WP Tigers' head baseball coach. "We got a good look at a lot of kids. It was a suc­cess for everyone."

Six baseball and softball teams, including the Day­ton Bulldogs, Waitsburg- Prescott Tigers and Touchet Indians, took three-inning turns playing each other in their first opportunity to measure themselves against competition.

Not that scores are the fo­cus of jamborees, the coach­es said, but both WP teams won their two matches. Sne­digar's team beat Touchet and Dayton each 3-0.

"We played real well," Snedigar said in reference to his pitchers' 9 strikeouts and his hitters' six runs. "Our timing was good at the plate."

WP softball coach Angie Potts was equally impressed by her team's 3-2 wins over Dayton and Touchet.

"For our first outing, I thought we had a pretty good showing," she said. "We have to make some improvements, but nothing worrisome."

The Lady Bulldogs staged a comeback to subdue Touchet 3-2 (with all three runs in the last inning), split­ting their results.

"It was a nice sunny day to get out and have a few practice games," assistant Bulldogs softball coach Des Jones said. "The girls got their cleats in the dirt and we were able to evaluate what we need to work on."

Even Sal Benavides, whose young Bulldogs base­ball team lost 6-2 against the Indians, liked what he saw from his players, who include four eighth graders and two exchange students.

"We struggled a little bit, but overall I was pretty happy," he said. "The little guys put the bat on the ball. We got a chance to score (in the last inning against WP), but didn't quite put it away."
