WP In Top 10 At Prosser Invitational

PROSSER - The Cardinals placed 10th in the tough Prosser Rotary Invitational Saturday thanks to the lofty performances from runner Seth Deal and thrower Ben Shafer.

"Seth and Ben both stood out and, between the two of them, got all of our points that we collected as a team," WP head track and field coach Jeff Bartlow said.

WP's 32 points allowed the boys team to vault ahead of such competitors as Richland, Kennewick, Ellensburg and DeSales. Dayton did not participate in the event.

Shafer placed third in shot put with 46-11. He also placed third in discus with 129-08.

"His shot and disk were both personal records for his career," Bartlow said. "So, he had a stellar day. He picked up 12 points for the team."

Deal placed first in the 3,200 meters, which he completed in just under 10 minutes. He finished the 1,600-meter race in fewer than 4.34 minutes, putting him in second after Hanford's Jeevan Philip who came in just under 4:31 minutes.

Deal received Bartlow's "Athlete of the Week," because "he's is always giving himself and his teammates a great effort," the head coach said. "With that sacrifice comes the rewards of his labor with victory in his runs and personal records."

The most notable absence from the running events was star sprinter James Thompkins, who injured his ankle on Friday night, said Bartlow, who speculated the Jubilee/PHS athlete would have had a very good meet.

"Looking at the times of his events (100, 200 and 400-meter sprints), he would have had possibly three individual titles that day. "It is too bad."

In Thompkins' absence, Cardinal Alex Dill was the only WP sprinter who placed in the 100 and 200-meter races, landing 25th and 20th in those competitions respectively.

Bartlow praised Brendon Donovan, Owen Lanning and Jose Esparza for their performance in hurdles. Donovan placed 10th in the 110, while Lanning placed 17th in the 110 and tied for 17th in the 300. Esparza ended up in 22nd place in the 300.

The Lady Cardinals did not garner points in Prosser. Points leader Maddy Witt was absent Saturday, her triple jump being the only chance for the girls to score among the much larger schools who came to the invitational, Bartlow said.

Thanks to thrower Selina Benito, who stepped up at the last minute, the lady Cardinals were able to put together a relay team with Adriana Benito, Yajaira Barragan and Blanca Quiroz, which placed 14th in the 4x200.

"I was happy with her spirit and effort to do the race as it was her first time on the track," Bartlow said.

WP co- hosts a home league meet with Dayton at Dayton on Wednesday. The first event starts at 3:30 pm.
