Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
The first annual Swim the Snake event, sponsored by the Waitsburg Commercial Club, will take place August 17 at Lyons Ferry, WA . this challenging open-water event gives participants opportu- nity to swim the dammed Snake River. Swimmers will meet at Lyons Ferry Park swimming beach and swim from the Part to Lyons Ferry Marina. Entry fee is $30.00. The event is a fundraiser for the Blue Mountain Resource Conservation and Develop- ment Council, a regional non-profit and two local youth swim teams, Pomeroy and Dayton.
The course across the river is approximately 0.7 miles long, diagonally. Depending on water levels, water tem- perature averages 69 degrees, river depth is 60'. The fastest swimmers usually finish in just under 25 minutes (at 3mph) and most swimmers are out of the water within 40 minutes (1.5 mph).
Requirements:

- The swim is for
intermediate level
or better swimmers. - All swimmers
must be at least
10 years old, in
good physical
health and must
wear a swim cap
due to safety
regulations.
- Swimmers under
15 years old must
EACH be accompanies by an adult
swimmer.
- Participants are
accepted on a
first-come, first-
served basis.
