Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Lady Cards Fall to WWVA

WAITSBURG – In the words of the 1961 hit “Mama Said”, made famous by The Shirelles: “Mama said there’d be days like this, there’d be days like this, Mama said.” That had to be what Cardinal players, coaches and fans were left thinking after a disheartening Sept. 19 loss against the Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights.

The first league game of the season started out promisingly enough as Cardinals and Knights battled it out neck-and-neck. With a score of 11 to 11 midway through the first game, the Cards faltered after landing on the receiving end of a series of aces from Knight senior Hannah Woolever. Unable to regain momentum, the Lady Cards lost the first game 25-18.

Confidence shaken, the Cardinals played on, but showed little resemblance to the level of play exhibited the weekend prior in tournament play. While the players hustled and showed typical scrappiness in diving for balls, plays never quite ‘gelled’ or ‘clicked’. It was quite simply, “one of those days.”

Powerful serves from the Knights, along with well placed spikes earned them wins of 25-8 and 25-13 in the following two games.

“WWVA is a very good and aggressive serving team,” said Cardinal Coach Angie Potts. “It was very disappointing that we didn’t respond well or play up to our potential.”

Sophomore Jaidyn Brown was Cardinal stat leader with four kills and three aces.

The Lady Cards will have the opportunity to get their mojo back at two games this week, playing at Tri-Cities Prep on the 24th and facing Dayton on the Waitsburg home court on the 26th.
