DAYTON -- Two suspects arrested in Dayton early Friday morning, after a chase initiated in Waitsburg, have been formally charged and are being held in the Walla Walla County Jail on $50,000 bail. Walla Walla dispatch received a call in the early morning hours of Oct. 10, from Jacob LuJan, of 100 Murphy Street in Waitsburg, reporting that an unknown assailant had broken into his home, stolen his wallet and assaulted him.
Columbia County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Dian Ver Valen confirmed that, at about 12:50 a.m. on Oct. 10, a Columbia County deputy heard the report and headed toward Waitsburg, ready to intercept the suspect, should he flee toward Dayton.
A Walla Walla deputy arrived at the scene and spoke with a female driver in a blue Toyota pickup who was leaving the area. The deputy gave the license and description of the woman's truck to dispatch while leaving her to make contact with a man in second truck in the area. LuJan identified the second man as uninvolved.
Meanwhile, Columbia County deputies received the license plate number and description of the blue Toyota. A Columbia County reserve deputy spotted the vehicle and pulled it over near the Shell station in Dayton, where a male suspect jumped from the vehicle and fled the scene. The deputy, who was detaining the female suspect in the vehicle, was unable to pur- sue. A wallet and contents, allegedly stolen from LuJan, was found on the floor of the vehicle.
Two Walla Walla County deputies were en route to Dayton when Columbia County Sheriff Rocky Miller was called in to search for the escaped suspect. Miller apprehended the male subject, who had fled on a bike, and turned him over to a Walla Walla deputy for ar- rest.
The suspect, David D. Cloyd has a warrant out in Columbia County for failure to register as a sex offender and has been arrested multiple times for that offense. Cloyd will return to Colum- bia County for prosecution after facing current Walla Walla County charges.
David D. Cloyd, 39, claiming no permanent address, appeared in Walla Walla Superior court on Monday morning and was formally charged with first- degree burglary and second- degree robbery. Jane L. Stone 49, of 1126 S. Fourth St., Dayton, appeared in court on Tuesday and was charged with second-degree robbery, first-degree bur- glary and rendering criminal assistance in the first and second degrees.
