PASCO - Senior E.J. Meserve performed admirably in the final race of his high school career, placing 29th out of 125 runners at Saturday's 1B/2B WIAA State Championship Cross Country Meet at Sun Willows Golf course here. Meserve finished the 5,000 meter race with a time of 17:38.11.
"This was E.J.'s fourth state appearance and his progression has been impressive," said WP X-C Coach Joanna Lanning. Meserve finished 95th in his freshman year with a time of 19:41; as a sophomore he came in 58th with a time of 18:41; as a junior he placed 49th at 18:26. This year he dropped nearly a minute off his time to place 29th. "I was very proud of him today," she said.
Freshman Emily Adams struggled during the race, collapsing on the course at one point. Even so, Adams still placed in the top half of the pack. Adams came in 32nd out of 72 runners with a time of 22:10.88 -- her slowest time in the 5,000 meters this season.
"It is my hope she will build on this experience and come back stronger this spring in track and next season in cross country," said Lanning.
