Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - The Dayton jumped out to an early lead in Saturday night's game here, with nine quick points, and led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. But the Bulldogs were unable to sustain their offence, as the WP Cardinals pulled out a 38-25 win.
WP coach Tavis Crittenden said early foul trouble hurt his team in the first half and caused his team to switch from man-to-man to zone defense after the intermission. "With the zone we were able to hold them to one field goal and four points in the second half," Crittenden said.
For the Cardinals, Chance Leroue scored 12 points, while Tyler Dodd and Chris Campbell added seven each. Zach Waggoner led Dayton with 12 points and Cruz Ramirez had five.
Crittenden gave credit to point guard Luke Alexenko for his strong defensive play. "Luke really helped shut down Dayton in the second half," he said.
"The Bulldogs did a good job slowing the game down, so we couldn't run," Crittenden added. "We had a hard time getting our game going."
In a home game Friday night, the Cardinals fell to Weston-McEwen 54-48. Devin Acevedo led WP with 10 points, followed by Owen Lanning with nine and Leroue with eight.
