A sculpture depicting a soldier grieving the loss of a fallen comrade was placed in front of the Veterans Memorial near the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Dayton on Saturday. According to Brian Black, commander of Dayton's American Legion Post #42, the bronze piece was created by the Walla Walla Foundry. It was made possible by a generous large gift from an anonymous donor, along with several smaller donations. Black said that Grant Griffin, grandson of Dayton Legion member Bob Budig and an employee of the foundry, donated his time to install the sculpture. Black and other legion members developed the design, and Black worked with Griffin and the foundry to create it.
