Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg-Prescott boys' basketball team won two big games over the weekend, extending their winning streak to four games. Their season-ending league record of 6-4 gives them a fourth seed going into the Southeast 2B District 9 tournament this week.
On Friday night, the Cards dismantled Dayton 48-26. For the third game in a row, forward Corey Brownlee led Cardinal scoring, this time with 10 points. Brownlee also led WP in rebounding with 10. Devin Acevedo and Owen Lanning each had seven points.
The Cardinals broke the game open early, taking an 18-9 lead after one period. They cruised from there, outscoring the Bulldogs in each quarter.
Zach Waggoner was high scorer for Dayton, with 11 points, followed by Logan Hays with nine.
On Saturday, WP overcame an early Asotin lead to beat the Panthers 56-48. After trailing by six at the end of one, the Cards outscored the Panthers 24-11 in the second quarter to take a 32-25 lead at the half.
Brownlee once again led the way, sinking nine of 18 shots for 18 points. He and Chance Leroue each had nine rebounds. Lanning added ten points for the Cardinals, and Acevedo and Chris Campbell each had nine.
With the #4 seed, the Cardinal get to host the "play-in" game for the District 9 Tournament Wednesday at 6 p.m. With a win, WP would move into the tournament and be guaranteed a spot in the sub- regional tournament the following weekend in Dayton and Waitsburg.
With Friday's loss, Dayton's season ended with a 0-10 record in the league and 1-19 overall.
