PRESCOTT - They might have had the home court, but WP wrestlers didn't have the advantage at Wednesday's meet against Pomeroy in Prescott. The Pirates walked away with wins in every match.
Adding insult to injury (or maybe the other way around), WP wrestler Kavin Kuykendall sustained a broken collarbone, ending his season.
WP Coach Lanny Adams said Pomeroy came, "ready to wrestle and it showed." He attributed some of his team's weak performance to the fact that it had been nearly two weeks since their last match.
"The WP wrestlers struggled in finding zone," he said. "A lot of the wrestlers made some pretty serious mistakes that cost them their matches. I'm not sure what happened, but I think it may be a case where they couldn't get their heads into the match as our last match occurred on the 16th of January when we travelled to Colfax. That is a lot of time to not have a match."

Adams said Tyler Brooks' second match of the evening -- in which he lost to Adams Herres in a 4-6 overtime decision -- was one of the most exciting. "It was a good, strong and hard battle on the mat. Both wrestlers were moving and working for moves the entire match. This match really had the coaches and spectators on the edge of their seats and that gym was loud!" said Adams.
Adams says he is hoping for a better outcome at their last league match of the season at Almira/Coulee/ Hartline (ACH) on Saturday. They will then compete against the Pirates again on February 4 in Pomeroy. After the ACH meet, coaches will meet in Ritzville to determine the seeding of the brackets for the Sub-regional tournament in Colfax on February 8.
