Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to encourage the citizens of the Dayton School District to support the Campus Wide Renovation project. As a member of the facility committee that presented the recommendation to the school board, we have reviewed all options extensively and have concluded the time has come to address the needs of our educational facilities. The high school was originally built in 1923 and had some remodeling done in 1984. The K-8 building was erected in the 1950's. The renovation will update outdated mechanical systems and will improve student learning spaces. While there have been ongoing maintenance efforts throughout the buildings, the truth is we are at the point where systems and equipment are failing and need to be addressed. Just like any structure that is 60 to 90 years old, there are times when you can fix the problem at an affordable cost, there are times when you can defer the maintenance and there are times that you need to address the issue in its entirety. We are now at the point of needing to address the big issues and that includes plumbing, wiring, heating, masonry, etc. Making these changes now will help to extend the life of the buildings and will improve the student learning environment. Please vote "Yes" to the Dayton School District Campus Wide Renovation Project.
