MILTON-FREEWATER - Several WP track athletes had strong showings at the District 9 Track and Field Meet here on April 16.
Emily Adams won the 3,200 meter race by default, as she was the only competitor. But she still had a great run and took more than 40 seconds off her best time.
"She kind of got into a rhythm, and Coach (Huntington) worked with her on a set time per lap and she was disciplined and followed up with a great time," said Head Track & Field Coach Jeff Bartlow. "She ran it by herself and that is not an easy thing to do. "
Adams also took second in the 400 meter race, second in the long jump and third in triple jump.
Beka Adams, Emily's sister, won the discus event, and took third in the shot put, with a personal record put of 26 feet, 11 inches.
On the boys' side, EJ Meserve won the 3,200 meter race and took second in the 1,600 meters. Kevin Aquino took second in the 400 meter race.
"Kevin ran a great 400 and will contend to be a State competitor in this event," said Bartlow. "He has really stepped up and works extremely hard in practice."
Hurdler Owen Lanning took second in both the 300 meter and 110 meter events, achieving PRs in both races. Lanning also won the triple jump event
The WP 4X100 relay team of Al Sessay, Kevin Aquino, Travis Crocket and Joe Leamy, also took second place.
In the throwing events, several Cardinals had personal records. In the Javelin, Brandon Penner took second with a throw of 126 feet, four inches. Mark Montgomery took fifth place and improved his personal best by more than 20 feet, with a throw of 118 feet, three inches.
"It really sailed, and he was really excited," said Bartlow.
Nate Bartlow also set a personal record in the shot put, with a heave of 37 feet, 10 inches.
