Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
Dear Editor:
Thanks to Dena Wood for her article regarding Senior Projects. Tiffany Stewart must have done an outstanding job preparing her senior project about ending the State Board of Education graduation requirement for a culminating/senior project. It may have been different had there been more publicity about the original legislative hearing so legislators could have heard other points of view on the issue. It's interesting that Ms. Stewart's arguments were not enough for the original bill (to end the senior project requirement) to pass on its own merits. It had to be tacked onto another bill as an amendment in order to make it through the process. Lucky for her she knew a legislator who understood the alternative method. Thanks, again, to Dena for her coverage of this issue as well as others she has covered.

Some Seniors Won't Graduate
Dear Editor:
Let me start by saying "Thank You" to those voters that chose to send a message to the Dayton School District by voting "NO" on the recent school levy. Now I'm sure that sentence didn't set well with those of you that voted for the levy, but let me share some information that I just received.
The 2014 graduating class of seniors in our high school only has 26 students. Every one of them is anticipating that on June 7 they will receive the diplomas that they have worked towards for the last 12 years. Now within the last two weeks these students are finding out that 6 possibly 7 of them will not get a signed diploma. Why you ask? It seems that somewhere, somehow, someone didn't make sure that these students had sufficient credits, especially in Math to graduate.
These seniors have spent countless hours applying for scholarships; they have spent hundreds of dollars for senior pictures, announcements, caps & gowns. They are making preparations for College in the fall. They have summer jobs to help with expenses and now they find out that they will be spending their summer taking an online geometry class to try to get those necessary credits. Results won't be available for them until August.
So why did this happen? Where does it leave these students? What happens to the scholarships that they might receive?
If you are the parent of a student in the Dayton high school, you need to get copies of your child's transcripts before the school year ends so you know where they stand. Make sure you get a copy in writing but don't count on that being accurate.
I hope this letter has given you some food for thought when the school district reruns their levy in the fall. My vote will be a "NO".
