Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
Archie Elden Lindsey was born June 28, 1922, in LaJunta Colorado to Ralph and Mary B. Butler Lindsey. He grew up during the Dust Bowl times in a financially strapped family. He often told stories of the little they had as children especially when it came to food. He went through school there through the 8^th grade. Despite his lack of schooling, he was capable of carrying on a conversation, while calculating in his head the exact number of bricks or blocks it would take to do a certain job. He did crossword puzzles daily until his sight no longer allowed it.
Archie joined the US Army in 1942 and rode the Queen Mary to the shores of England at the age of 20. He mostly talked of the men he met while “over there” and driving an Army ambulance. His favorite part to tell about driving an ambulance in England was that he never hauled a patient!
After returning from the war, Archie moved to Washington State where he met and married his wife, Bernadene Barnes. She was born and raised in the wonderful town of Dixie. Bernadene passed away in 1976. The Lindseys raised four children: Mary Ellen (Berg), Elden (Bubby), Judy (Reser), and John Lindsey.
Archie was a masonry contractor and built many buildings and residences, as well as numerous brick and block fireplaces. Archie raised Appaloosa horses and became well-known for his clock collection and repair business. He could take a clock works apart and put it back together without a diagram or a picture. He loved clocks and spent a great deal of time working on them for friends, family, and customers.
Papa will be missed by his children, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two greatgreat grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, son, parents, four sisters (two in infancy) and one brother.
A memorial service will be held on Friday May 9, 2014, at the First Christian Church, 604 Main Street, Waitsburg, Washington. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
