CLARKSTON - The WP boys' 4X100 and 4X400 relay teams took impressive victories last week at the District 9 2B track and field meet here last week.
In the 4X1, the team of Al Sessay, Kevin Aquino, Travis Crocket and Kobie Brown beat a strong Pomeroy team by less than half a second. The 4X4 team of Aquino, Crocket Brown and Owen Lanning, easily outran second place Asotin by four seconds.
Lanning, who was fighting off a flu bug, according to coach Jeff Bartlow, also won the triple jump. He and teammate brown tied for second in the 110 meter hurdles.
"We pulled him from the 300 (hurdles) as he was really under the weather," said Bartlow.
For Dayton, Kaitlyn Andrews won both the javelin and long jump at the Clarkston meet. She also finished second in the 100 meter dash and the triple jump.
For the first time in many years, the WP boys are not in the running for the district title in track and field at the end of the season, according to Bartlow.
"We just don't have the depth and Asotin has a huge turnout and a lot of fine athletes to go along with it," he said. Asotin has already clinched the title.
In the field events for WP's boys, Brown placed second in the high jump, clearing five feet, eight inches. Nate Bartlow and Zion Branson were third and fourth, respectively, in the shot put.
" Zion Branson had a break thorough in the shot and both Zion and Nate have a good opportunity in the shot at sub district and then district," Bartlow said.
In 2013, the WP boys came up five points short of winning the title. That loss broke a six-year string of WP league titles.
"So, we are working on getting as many kids to District and then a week later to State," Bartlow said.
For WP's girls, Beka Adams placed second in both the shot put and discus. She had a personal record in the shot at 28 feet, five inches. Beka's sister, Emily, had an excellent meet as well, finishing second in the 3,200 meter run and fifth in the 400 meters.
For the Dayton boys, Oscar Teixeira continued his strong showings in the 100 meter Hurdles, placing fifth. He was also eighth in the 100 meters.
The Southeast 2B Subdistrict Meet was to be held in Walla Walla on Wednesday. The top eight finishers in each event were to move on to the District meet next week in Moscow, Ida. The State Track and Field Championships will be held in Cheney on May 30 and 31.
