PRESCOTT - WP athletes and families gathered in the Prescott High School multipurpose room for the annual Spring Sports Award Dessert.
Varsity softball coach Angie Potts introduced her team while commenting on each player. Potts said sophomore Jaidyn Brown pitched a total of 131 innings this year with 68 strike-outs and 54 walks. The team will only lose one senior - Heidi Miller - this year, and Potts is anticipating stronger play from a more experienced team next year.
Miller was called to the front, allowed to return to her seat, and then called back up front three times. Miller received the team votes for Most Inspirational Player, stat-based recognition as Most Valuable Player and graduating senior recognition. Miller also made First Team All Conference. Sophomore Caitlyn Jones received the Most Improved Player award.
Baseball coach Dustin Snedigar opened by thanking Prescott's Mike Wallace for the overtime hours and hard work invested in field maintenance. He thanked athletic directors Stephanie Wookerchak and Sue DeRuwe for their efforts in organizing schedules and transportation. Snedigar also thanked Prescott superintendent Brett Cox for the new shelving in the dugout and Mark Grant for dirt in the infield.
Snedigar was pleased with the 11-11 season that left the team 7-5 in the league. He made special note of a 3-1 win against Asotin, a team he said WP hadn't beaten in years. Snedigar introduced his team and recognized Talen Larsen as MVP, Chad Pearson as Most Improved and Devin Acevedo as Most Inspirational. Freshman Kyle Gradwohl and junior Talen Larsen were named All League.
Track Coach Jeff Bartlow was pleased with a season that sent twelve athletes to state. Bartlow said that the team was a smaller group with less depth than in years past, so they chose to focus on individual events rather than team placing.
Bartlow recognized a male and female for each award. Kevin Aquino and first-year track participant Kimmie Hamann received the Most Improved Athlete awards. The team-voted Most Inpirational Player awards went to Meara Baker and Owen Lanning. The MVP award was based on points. Lanning won for the boys with 260.5 points and Emily Adams won for the girls with 176.5 points.
