Safe Summer Fun at the Pool

PRESCOTT - For several years the Prescott Joint Parks & Recreation District (PJPRD) has designated one day each summer as a Safety Day to teach children about pool safety. Last year the district expanded that program and joined forces with area agencies who addressed additional aspects of safety. This year's Safety Day took place on June 24 and, with children from Walla Walla's Campfire program, youngsters from Vista Hermosa and Prescott locals, PJPRD Administrative Assistant Yvonne Jackson estimates the event served approximately 150 children.

Inside the pool, Prescott lifeguards gave children a tour of the facilities and the pool equipment. They discussed pool safety and gave rescue demonstrations then lead the children in games and relays and fun on the Slip 'n Slide.

Representatives from local agencies set up booths throughout the park where they talked with children and gave out resources. The Corps of Engineers provided information on boating and river safety, the sheriff's office spoke on personal safety and the forest service taught on fire and camping safety. Representatives from Allegro Bicycles offered information on bicycle safety.

Jackson is pleased with the expanded focus of the event. "We want people to know that we do more for the young people than just provide a place to swim," she said.
