Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Looking Forward to Public Art

Dear Editor,

Thanks to Councilman Kuykendall for at least asking about polling citizens to see which artwork they would prefer on permanent display to represent Waitsburg. A shame the Art Commission didn't consider doing that early enough to gain valuable input from more of those living in the community where the final choices would reside.

Thanks, also, to Ross Hamann for reminding folks who could attend of previous input--from the community--regarding the original streetscape project and the fact that life-size interactive sculptures that folks could mingle with were wanted.

And thanks to Randy for asking our opinion of the four pieces of art submitted to represent Waitsburg. No mention was made in The Times article whether his polling results were given at the meeting prior to the vote.

Finally, thanks to the City Council for making a decision that could never please everyone. All that is left is to await the installation of the selected artwork. Then I can go downtown to visit the "elegant and most eloquent" Waitsburg Memorial (sure hope it doesn't represent an ending as did the other obelisks referenced). I'm thinking interacting with an obelisk may be a little harder and less fun than leaning on a depiction of sacks of wheat or standing with the founding fathers pushing them, but that's just me.
