Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

RELAY FOR LIFE THIS WEEKEND

DAYTON - This year's annual Relay for Life will begin Saturday, Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. at the Dayton Athletic Complex and run through the night to end at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. The event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and helps support cancer research, education, advocacy and service. Relay for Life symbolizes the hopes that people lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face the disease have support, and that one day cancer will be cured.

The theme for this year's fun, overnight event is "Finish the Fight - Celebrate Life!"Survivors should register prior to the opening ceremonies in order to receive a free T-shirt and BBQ ticket. The opening ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. with Teri Hessler sharing her survivor story. The American Legion color guard will then lead survivors in a Survivor's Lap.

Teams of individuals camp out and take turns walking or running around the track and visitors are encouraged to join in the celebration and enjoy the fundraiser BBQ. Luminaries, to honor a loved one, may be purchased prior to the 8 p.m. Luminaria Ceremony. The evening will be filled with games and entertainment. A "Road to Recovery" Slow Drag race is a new event aimed at bringing recognition to the Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program which provides transportation to those who have cancer. Participants should bring a cardboard box car to the "Show and Shine" and race.

There will be no fire pits at the event for warming this year, so participants are encouraged to dress warmly or bring a propane warmer.
