Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
Laurette DeLoris McCaw, age 84, was welcomed into Heaven on Oct. 6, 2014. She was born on June 7, 1930, in Dusty, WA, to Jacob J. and Martha Weber Stueckle. The youngest of seven children, she moved with her family to the Prescott area in 1936 where her father farmed near Clyde.
She attended and graduated from the Prescott school system in 1948. She then attended Whitworth College for one year as a music major and was proficient on the piano, accordion and trombone.
On November 20, 1949, she married Jack M. Mc- Caw in Walla Walla, WA, and began her life as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and partner in the family farm in the Touchet Valley near Waitsburg. She and Jack worked extremely hard to grow their operation over the decades.
She did everything on the farm from riding the drills during seeding to driving wheat truck during harvest, as well as preparing fabulous meals for the harvest crew.
Among Laurette's many interests were crafting and painting, gardening, canning, sewing, cooking and baking. She was well known for the dozens of pies she would bake for friends and family over the holidays. Black bottom pie was her specialty. She also enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren play sports, and attended as many of their events as she could.
She was a member of the Waitsburg Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for over 50 years. She was also a member of PEO, Eastern Star, Odako Club, United Presbyterian Women, Washington Association of Wheat Growers, Touchet Valley Grain Growers and Northwest Grain Growers. In recent years, Laurette and Jack were named Waitsburg Booster Club " Boosters of the Year", Waitsburg Historical Society " Pioneers of the Year", and in 2013 were the Parade Marshals for the Waitsburg Celebration Days.
Laurette is survived by her husband Jack; son J.E. (Sandy) McCaw, son Guy (Lynn) McCaw, daughter Laurie Withers; grandchildren John (Tarah) McCaw, Kelly (Tanner) Steinhoff, Amber (Mike) Roberts, Jesse (Kate) McCaw, Wyatt (Amanda) Withers and Megan (David) Brock. Great grandchildren Kiya, Lucas, Chloe, Ava, Colton, Rilee, Chase, Tucker, Trace, Hadley, Caden, Madison and Monroe; sister Birdie (Dick) Holling and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Victor, Walter and Edwin, and sisters Frieda and Clara.
A private graveside service was held at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Waitsburg. The memorial service was held on Friday, October 10, 2014, at the Waitsburg Presbyterian Church at 4:00 p.m. A reception was held at the Waitsburg Lions Memorial Building at the Waitsburg Fairgrounds immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
