Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - A group of WHS seniors and a few parents recently volunteered a couple of weekends prettying up the football field bleachers. The benches sported fresh coats of red and white paint for this year's homecoming weekend.
WHS senior Hannah Grant said she realized the project was needed after she sat down for the first home game and got splinters in her legs. "I was talking to Marty and Becky Dunn about it and we all felt they needed some love," she said.
Grant said she decided to spearhead the project because she didn't think the project would be too overwhelming and that it would be a good way for the seniors to give back. The painting was intended to be a senior class project but with sports schedules and the need for good weather, only a few were able to help when the sunshine hit.
Troy Anderson II, Sofia Mercado, Sam Walker, Luke Alexenko, Jacob Dunn, Mark and Miriam Grant and Becky and Marty Dunn covered splinters and dressed the home and visiting team bleachers with a fresh coat of white paint the last weekend in September. The next weekend Hannah joined the Dunns in painting the team benches red.
The volunteer effort became a community project when several businesses and organizations donated to the cause. The Waitsburg Lions donated money to buy paint and supplies, Gary's Paint donated brushes, roller covers, trays and buckets, Rodda Paint donated paint for the team benches and Waitsburg Hardware Store donated roller handles.
"I feel like everything went really well and we had the perfect amount of help. It was only about three weeks between getting the idea and finishing," said Grant. "I've heard a lot of positive remarks and comments. I am really thankful for all the help and I couldn't have done it without everyone's support."
