WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg-Prescott football team clinched the Southeast 2B District 9 championship with a 31-6 drubbing of DeSales Friday night. With the senior players donning superhero socks for Senior Night, the Cardinals appeared to display super powers as they outscored the Irish 21-0 in the second half.
The game started out as a defensive battle, as the Cards ended the first quarter with a 3-0 lead on an Antonio Benito 22-yard field goal. The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, with WP scoring on a Travis Crockett 62-yard burst. The lead was 10-6 at the half.
"I was really proud of our guys," said WP Coach Jeff Bartlow. "They did not panic at the half. Three possessions in the third quarter and three TD's; it was nice."
Senior Devin Acevedo started the Cards' second half fireworks with a 13-yard pass reception from quarterback Jacob Dunn to push the lead to 11 points. On the next possession, Owen Lanning ran the ball in from the 14. Early in the fourth quarter, Lanning scored again on a 19-yard pass from Dunn.
Bartlow said he was especially proud of Prescott High senior Danny Stansell, who returned the the team this year after a year away. "[Stansell] had his best game as a starter on both sides of the football," Bartlow said. "He played his best game at Center and his best game at LB. I was very happy for him. He and the rest of the OL had their best day."
The Cards had a balanced attack on offense, rushing for 277 yards and passing for 205. Dunn was 16 for 22 passing, with one interception and one TD.
Running Backs Crockett and Kobie Brown both had good rushing games. Crockett ran for 93 yards on seven carries, including the long touchdown run. Brown ran for 90 yards on nine carries.
Acevedo led the receivers with seven catches for 88 yards and one TD. Lanning caught four passes for 57 yards and one touchdown, and Talen Larsen caught two for 46 yards.
Kicker Antonio Benito had another great game, going 4-4 in PATs, plus his fifth field goal of the year. "He is just a great weapon to have on our team," Bartlow said.
On Thursday, the Cardinals travel to Asotin to take on the Panthers, who are 0-2 in league play. Even if WP was to lose, they would still win the league title by virtue of their victories over Tri-Cities Prep and DeSales. Those two teams play for second place on Thursday.
As league champions, WP will begin playoff action on either November 8 or 9, taking on the fifth seed in the Northeast District 7 league, Liberty (Spangle), at home.
