Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
DAYTON - It looked like WWVA would take the game when they won the first two sets in their league match against Dayton on Oct. 30, but the Lady 'Dogs rallied to hand WWVA their first league loss of the season 19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-16 and 15-12. The win put the Bulldogs 8-2 in league and 15-5 overall.
"We lost the first two sets and came out fighting in the third, fourth and fifth to win. We put it all together offensively and defensively and dug deep, playing the entire games and finishing strong," said Bulldog coach Shannon Turner. Turner credited middles Madison Mings and Bryeana Myrick for dominating the net in the last three sets, each making an impressive nine blocks. "They hit the ball aggressively and added fifteen kills between them!" she added.
Stats for the night were: Lexie Ramirez with 4 aces, 4 kills, 10 assists and 9 digs; Sarah Phillips with 4 kills and 13 digs; Taylor Frame with 6 digs, Madison Mings with 10 kills, 13 digs, 9 blocks; Bryeana Myrick with 9 blocks and 5 kills, Mia Becker with 10 digs, Jenna Phillips with 4 aces, 12 kills, 10 digs and 2 blocks, Josilyn Fullerton with 2 aces, 8 kills, 9 assist, 13 digs and 2 blocks. Josilyn Fullerton served a perfect 17-17 with Madison Mings right behind with a perfect 16-16 service.
"I'm extremely proud of all my girls," said Turner. "They played smart and they played as a team. Hard work pays off!"
The loss left WWVA with a 9-1 standing in league play and 19-3 overall but because Regionals are held on Saturday, the Adventist Knights will forfeit their spot at the tournament, giving Dayton top seed ranking. The regional tournament will take place at Cheney High School. "I think we've got a pretty good shot," said Turner.
