WAITSBURG - The Lady Cards took a hit in their first match of the season, falling 60-17 against the Pomeroy Pirates in a home court match on Dec. 6. In spite of the score, coach J.T. Elsey said he felt the team performed well overall.
"I felt that the girls played a pretty good game, although the overall score did not reflect that. They did pretty good for the first time playing for a new leader that has a complete different set of expectations," he said.
Elsey said the team put forth a decent defense and came up with some good rebounds.
"Where we failed to perform was making the baskets within the key. We went four for 33 on two-point shots. It would have made the game a lot more interesting if we had been able to execute those shots," he said. "I expected a little more ball movement and a little quicker pace," he said.
Paige Wood was top scorer with a total of five points, in spite of fouling out in the third quarter. Caitlyn Mohney was next earning the only three-pointer of the game. Loegan Harshman and Wood played strong at the board, nabbing six and five defensive rebounds, respectively.
"The player that stands out most is Caitlyn Mohney on offense with a clutch three. Paige Wood did a very good job rebounding and was top scorer," he said. Elsey said Pomeroy's strength was their height and that they played very fundamental basketball.
The Lady Cards were to travel to Touchet on Dec. 9 to face off against the Indians. On Dec. 12 the Cards will have a second chance against the Pirates, this time on the Pomeroy court.
