Hoops and Jump for Heart Brings In Big Bucks

Waitsburg students exceed fundraising goal by over $200

WAITSBURG – The WHS gymnasium was a happening place on Wednesday, Feb. 18 as Waitsburg elementary and middle school students jumped rope, hula hooped and shot baskets as part of a campaign to raise funds for the American Heart Association (AHA). The students easily surpassed their set goal of $3,000 and raised $3,212.57, through pledges from friends and family, to help the AHA meet their goal of building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

A walk through the gym and it was apparent that raising money for a good cause could be as much fun as it is work. Smiles abounded as elementary students, staff and high school helpers jumped, swayed and shot baskets. Kindergarten through third grade students played a variety of games involving jump ropes and hula hoops while fourth through sixth graders shot baskets.

Hoops and Jump for Heart is a community service project that teaches students the importance of hearth health – exercise, good nutrition and living tobacco free – while having a good time shooting hoops and jumping ropes. Students had the opportunity to raise funds for research and educational materials to lower the risks of America's #1 and #4 killers: heart disease and stroke, said program organizer and first grade teacher Dinah Lindsey. "Way to go, students of Waitsburg!" she added.
