WAITSBURG – Eight Waitsburg High School musicians are preparing to perform with the Southeast Washington Music Educators’ High School Honor Band in Colfax on March 9. School officials are pleased to note that this is the largest group from Waitsburg to attend Honor Band in many years.
Honor band students must be good musicians who commit to practices and rehearsals, according to WHS band director Brad Green. The eight students who applied and were accepted to the prestigious group include Emily Adams (baritone horn), Korben Duffy (percussion), Tayler Jones (flute), Kitty Lambert (alto sax), Chloe Pearson (flute and xylophone), Chris Philbrook (trumpet), Ariel Sandau (flute) and Robert Walsh on baritone horn. All are freshman or sophomores.
Honor Band is a 65-member large wind ensemble made up of expert high school musicians from southeastern Washington. “They play music that is a cut above normal in difficulty. The three pieces for this year’s performance are the Korean War piece ‘Inchon,’ the moving ‘On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss’, and the fast and furious ‘Heartbeat Five,’” said Green. Patrick Winter from Eastern Washington University bands will be conducting.
The concert will take place in the Colfax High School auditorium on Monday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. The talented High School Honor Choir will also perform. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors or $10 for a family. “We warmly invite the Touchet Valley community to make the drive for this extraordinary concert,” said Green.
