Walk-off Panther win in second game spoils chance for split
ASOTON – The WP girls' softball team lost two league games to Asotin here Saturday, 11-3 and 5-4.
In game 1, the Tigers struggled early, giving up seven runs in the first two innings. After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, they couldn't get much going offensively.
"We got ourselves in a hole in the first game and just weren't mentally ready to play," said WP Coach Angie Potts. "We started to play with more focus in the later innings but weren't able to make up the run difference."
WP committed three errors, which really hurt their effort. Jaidyn Brown had a good game pitching, giving up only seven hits, despite the eleven runs. Kassidy Kuykendall had two hits for the Lady Tigers.
In the second game, WP jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and was able to stay even with the panthers until the bottom of the seventh and final inning, when Asotin scored a walk-off run.
"The girls made plays and didn't let up," Potts said. "Our defense has improved quite a bit in the last couple of games and is starting to make plays with confidence. We've still got to work on being more productive on offense and executing at the plate," she added.
WP has this week off for spring break and will hit the field again Tuesday, with a double-header in Spangle against Liberty.
