WP Baseball Drops DeSales Double-Header

Saturday losses come after one-hit victory over Riverside of Boardman, 3-0

PRESCOTT – The defending state champion DeSales baseball team came to Prescott Saturday, and the WP Tigers gave them all they could handle. But the Tigers came up just short in both games.

A seventh-inning run gave the Irish a 1-0 victory in the first game, and three extra-inning DeSales runs in the ninth were the Tigers undoing in the second game – a 6-3 loss.

The first game was a pitching masterpiece between WP's Jacob Dunn and DeSales' Cam Richman. Richman was a little better, throwing a no-hitter against the Tigers, and striking out eight. Dunn gave up three hits, including a seventh-inning single that led to the game's only run.

After a walk and a fielder's choice, the Irish had runners at first and third in the seventh. They executed a successful double-steal to bring home the game-winner.

In the second game, the Tigers led twice before DeSales tied the game at three in the fifth. The game went into extra innings, and in the top of the ninth, the Irish pushed across three more runs to win it.

Talen Larsen pitched five innings and was relieved by Kyle Gradwohl in the sixth. Tyler Fedderson replaced Gradwohl in the ninth. The Irish outhit the Tigers, 10-7, with five of their hits coming in the ninth.

Kyle Gradwohl had an RBI triple in the third inning and added a double later in the game. Leroue and Jacob Hargrove also had hits. WP also took advantage of five Riverside errors.

"I was impressed with the way we played defensively and pitched after spring break," said WP Coach Dustin Snedigar. "We stayed patient at the plate, and Kyle Gradwohl did a great job of driving the ball in key spots with runner on."
