Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
DAYTON – The weather over Memorial Day weekend was perfect for all the festive, outdoor activities around town, not too hot but dry with a fresh breeze.
Dozens of floats, horses and vehicles paraded down Main Street in honor of Dayton Days. Participants included organizations from Walla Walla, Milton-Freewater and other neighboring communities as well as local groups: Dayton Elementary School children on their bikes; the Touchet Valley Arts Council promoting this fall's musical, The Wizard of Oz; the Columbia County Fair with smiling, waving hostesses, announcing the 125th Year of Fair Fun; the local Kiwanis Club celebrating 100 years of service; county public safety officers in ambulance, fire engine and patrol vehicle; and many others.
Crowds swarmed the Columbia County Fairgrounds to watch mules in action in the main arena or to take part in other Mule Mania activities such as chuck-wagon dining, live entertainment and beer garden, fairground mall treats or shopping for western gear. Mule Mania participants joined with the Dayton Days Parade this year, following behind the last float with several teams of mules pulling wagons and other mule-riding displays.
Visitors to the Boldman House and the Historic Dayton Depot participated in or watched demonstrations of quilt blocking, old-fashioned laundry activities, planting flowers, making rag dolls, cooking with cast iron and a fire pit, making butter, making bobbin lace, watching wool spun into yarn, beading, weaving, embroidery and soap making.
And this weekend Blue Mountain Station celebrated the opening of its summer season with a public market and family activities such as arts, crafts, sampling of specialty foods, fresh produce, live music, and other kids' activities.
