PRESCOTT – On Friday, Sept. 25, a sign along Hwy. 124 will be dedicated honoring the Flathers’ Halfway House.
Beginning in 1869, Benjamin and Malinda Flathers provided accommodations for travelers along the Mullan Road. The station was called the Halfway House because of its location approximately halfway between Fort Walla Walla and the Mullan Road’s crossing at Lyon’s Ferry.
Dedication of the sign will begin at 3:30 p.m at the Prescott Elementary School , in Room 504, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the sign which is located on the first turnout west of Prescott on SR 124 just to the east of its intersection with SR 125.
The event, sponsored by Walla Walla 2020, will include comments by archaeologist Steve Roberts who has assisted in researching the past of the road and currently lives on a portion of the Flathers place.
