Sacks and turnovers are too much for Waitsburg to overcome
WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg Cardinal offense stumbled against Weston-McEwen Thursday night, gaining only 101 total yards, as the Cardinals fell to Weston-McEwen 27-13 in a non-conference home game.
Waitsburg Quarterback Jacob Dunn was sacked four times and suffered five other negative-yardage plays in the game. The Cardinals also lost two fumbles.
The Cardinals got off to a good start, scoring on a Travis Crockett 12-yard run after Jordan Garrity recovered a fumble on the Tiger-Scots' first play from scrimmage.
After two Tiger-Scot rushing scores, Crockett again scored in the second quarter, this time on a four-yard run, giving Waitsburg a temporary 13-12 lead.
Weston-McEwen quickly scored again when Dunn was picked off for what turned into a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The second half was a defensive battle, with the cardinals unable to get anything going on offense.
For the game, Dunn was 10 for 17 passing, for 89 yards, but was intercepted twice. Crockett rushed the ball 15 times for 55 yards and two TDs.
Receiver Jason Carter caught four Dunn passes on the night for 38 yards. Crockett had three receptions for 30 yards, and Brandon Penner caught three passes for 21 yards.
The Cardinals will have a chance to recover from their first loss this year with a bye week. Next week Waitsburg will take on Kiona-Benton on the road on Oct. 2.
