Lady Dogs Take First Davenport Win in 10 Years
DAYTON – The Dayton Bulldogs scored a big win Saturday in a home court match against the Davenport Gorillas. The Lady Dogs played a tough five sets to take the win: 18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 15-6.
“The Lady Dogs went in ready to play. They worked well together and put it all on the court,” said Coach Shannon Turner. She credited the win to the girls’ great teamwork, solid defense and “very scrappy” play.
“The last time we beat Davenport was in 2005. This is a big win for the Bulldogs!” she said.
Top stats went to Josilyn Fullerton with 26/27 serving, two aces, seven kills, 11 assists and 18 digs and Jenna Phillips with 13/14 serving, two aces, 11 kills, 13 blocks, and 14 digs. Mia Becker scored 16 digs and one kill and Hanna Becker added seven kills, 10 assists, three blocks and nine digs.
On Sept. 15, the Lady Bulldogs won an away non-conference match against Tekoa-Rosalie in a quick three sets: 25-12, 26-24, 25-10. Fullerton, Philips, Mia Becker, Hanna Becker and Megan Robbins were top stat scorers in that match.
The Dogs started season play with a 3-1 home court, non-conference loss to the Weston-McEwen TigerScots on Sept. 10.
Last weekend’s Davenport win leaves the Bulldogs with a season record of 3-1 and a 1-0 league standing. The Bulldogs face off against DeSales on the Irish court in a conference match on Tues., Sept. 22 followed by a home match against WWVA on Sept. 29.
