Team gains experience at Yakima Sundome Festival
WAITSBURG – The Lady Cards had a busy week last week, taking on Spangle on Wed., Walla Walla Valley Academy on Thursday and attending the Yakima Sundome Volleyball Festival on Friday.
The Lady Cards lost an away non-conference match to Spangle on Sept. 16 in three sets: 21-25, 16-25, 7-25. "We started out well but played flat in the last set. Part of the goal was to use this non-league match as a warm-up for league and finish looking at combinations on the floor," said Coach Angie Potts.
Stat leaders for the Spangle match were: Ariel Sandau 10/10 serving, two aces, five assists; Devon Harshman, three kills; Bailey Adams, two kills and four digs; Caitlin Mohney, six digs; and Caitlyn Jones, six digs.
On Sept. 17, the Cardinals fell to the WWVA Knights in a home-court league match: 17-25, 15-25, 11-25. "WWVA is very talented and has multiple options on offense. I'm pretty happy with how my girls played. They worked hard on defense and were able to put some things together," Potts said.
Stat leaders were: Bailey Adams, six digs, 9/9 serving; Caitlin Mohney, five digs; Jade Alleman, three kills; Devon Harshman, two blocks.
At the Sundome Festival the Cardinals played Riverside Christian (25-15, 18-25), Okanogan (17-25, 12-25), and Bickelton (25-20, 25-22) to finish second in their pool. In bracket play the Lady Cards faced off against Heppner, Ore. (25-22, 17-25, 13-15) and Christian Faith (8-25, 12-25), finishing 15th out of 32 teams.
"Overall, we had a great day. The girls got play time against some bigger 1A schools and competed very well. They showed a lot of heart, played as a team, and supported each other both on and off the court. They made improvements in their court coverage and adjusted to what they were seeing from other teams. They're starting to read what the hitters are doing and make adjustments," Potts said.
Yakima stat leaders were: Ariel Sandau, 25 assists, five aces; Bailey Adams, nine kills, 22 digs, three aces; Caitlin Mohney, five kills, 16 digs, four aces; Caitlyn Jones, 12 digs, eight aces; Devon Harshman, 14 kills, three blocks; Jade Alleman four kills, Tayler Joens, six kills.
The Lady Cardinal's season record is 6-8 and they stand 0-1 in league play. The Cardinals travel to Asotin for a non-conference match on Sept. 22 and resume league play in Waitsburg against Tri-Cities Prep on Sept. 24.
