Two TDs are called back as missed opportunities stifle Waitsburg offense
BENTON CITY – The Waitsburg Cardinals got their wings clipped by a dominant Kiona-Benton Team Friday night, losing 39-0.
The defense for the Bears, a state Class 1A team, stifled the Cardinals’ passing attack. Quarterback Jacob Dunn was held to only 4 of 21 passing, for 39 yards. Travis Crockett was a workhorse at running back, picking up 83 yards on 22 carries. But that was the majority of Waitsburg’s total of 138 yards rushing.
“The good news from the game is that our mistakes are fixable and the Cardinals improved overall from the previous games versus WM (Weston-McEwen),” said Cardinal Coach Troy Larsen. “I really thought the Offensive and Defensive line played much better and if they can make that improvement again, we are going to be tough.”
Larsen also pointed out that the Cardinals were missing four starters last week. “A lot of young kids got valuable playing time that will help us out as we get deeper in the season,” he said.

For the game, Jordan Garrity added 48 yards rushing on seven carries, and Brandon Penner carried three times for 16 yards. Garrity also had two catches for 18 yards, and Crockett had one catch for 19 yards.
On Defense, freshman Ky Adams had a team-high 10 tackles in his first start. Nicolas Kitselman added seven tackles and an interception. Mark Montgomery also had seven tackles.
The Cardinals are celebrating homecoming this week and host Columbia-Burbank.
