Crockett rushes for 206 yards and two TDs in 20-13 Waitsburg win
Waitsburg running back Travis Crockett escaped the grasp of a defender during a game earlier this year. Crockett rushed for over 200 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Cardinals' win over DeSales Friday night.
WALLA WALLA – The Waitsburg Cardinal football team held off a tough DeSales squad Friday night, beating the Irish 20-13 in their first league game of the year.
After a scoreless first quarter, DeSales built a 13-0 lead in the second quarter on consecutive drives leading to rushing touchdowns.
The Cardinals were able to cut the lead to 13-7 in the final minute of the half on a three-yard Travis Crockett running touchdown.
The Cardinals' defense stepped up in the second half, as they held the Irish scoreless, while Waitsburg scored twice.
In the third quarter, Dunn scored on a seven-yard keeper. And in the fourth, Crockett again scored a rushing touchdown, this time from 19 yards out.
Late in the fourth quarter, now trailing 20-13, the Irish got a big play on a screen pass to take the ball to the Cardinal 10 with less than four minutes remaining. The Cardinal defense then kept the Irish out of the end zone on the ensuing four plays and took over on downs on their own four-yard-line, with 38 seconds remaining, sealing the victory.
"We were down 0-13 and scored with under a minute to go in half, that was a huge momentum swing in our direction," said Waitsburg Coach Troy Larsen. "The second half we knew Travis (Crockett) would be able to gain yards on them and if we could put pressure on the DeSales defense they would get tired."
For the game, Crockett rushed for 206 yards on 24 carries, with two touchdowns. Dunn had six carries for 26 yards and the one TD.
Dunn was 10 for 19 passing, for 144 yards. He had one interception. Jason Carter had five catches for 47 yards. Nick Kitselman had two catches for 60 yards.
Defensively, Ky Adams had 12 tackles, two sacks and one fumble recovery. Mark Montgomery had 12 tackles and one sack on the night.
