Crockett Shines in Cardinal Win over TCP

Travis Crockett had 365 all-purpose yards, five TDs in 41-15 win

WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg Cardinals football team moves on to the playoffs this week after a dominating performance against Tri-Cities Prep Thursday night, beating the Jaguars 41-15.

Waitsburg's Travis Crockett had a career game, scoring five touchdowns and accounting for 365 total yards in the game.

Crockett scored the game's first points with a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, playing defensive back, picked off a TCP pass and returned it 72 yards for another TD.

From the running back position on offense, Crockett added three rushing touchdowns, including a 10-yard run in the first quarter and runs of three and 15 yards in the third.

"It was a lot of fun watching Travis read blocks, put his foot in the turf and make some gorgeous cuts," said Cardinals Coach Troy Larsen. "Whenever you have a RB going for yards like that your offensive line and receivers are really doing a good job blocking down field," he added.

Crockett ended up with 176 yards rushing, 58 yards passing, plus the punt and interception returns for a total of 365 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.

Cardinal quarterback Jacob Dunn also had an outstanding game, completing 14 of 22 passes for 200 yards and no interceptions.

"I also want to congratulate the linebackers for having the best game of the year as a unit," Larsen said. "They were stepping up into the gaps and shut down the run game in the second half."

With the win, the Cardinals move into the postseason. On Friday they will host Davenport at 7 p.m.

"Davenport is 95% run," said Larsen, "and we have had our issues stopping teams that are smaller, athletic, and aggressive with the run game."

Larsen put out a challenge to the community: "The team would like to ask the community of Waitsburg to come out to Cardinal Field Friday night and cheer loud and proud for your Cardinals. They are working hard this week and are very excited for the opportunity that they have in front of them."
