Cardinals Can't Keep Up with Pirates

Turnovers, 3-pointers sink Waitsburg boys in 1st game, 70-51

POMEROY – The Waitsburg boys’ basketball team struggled Saturday night against a fine-tuned Pomeroy attack, and came up short, 70-51.

The Pirates drained ten three-pointers during the game, including several at key moments in the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Cardinals also gave up multiple turnovers.

“Their press really got to us,” said Waitsburg coach Tavis Crittenden. “A lot of their points came off turnovers.”

Crittenden said he was happy with his team’s performance in their first outing of the year. “We did a lot of things right,” he said. “There were a lot of jitters out there, being the first game, and Pomeroy has an outstanding team.”

The Cardinals were led by Kyle Gradwohl, with 18 points, including four threes. Mark Montgomery added 17 points. Jacob Dunn led the team in rebounds with 13. He also had five blocked shots.

“We need to get Jacob to shoot a little more,” Crittenden said. Dunn was one for three from the field, sinking a lone three-pointer for his only points. “He was doing a great job handling the press and trying to get the ball to the open man.” Dunn also had five assists.

The Cardinals were to travel to Spangle to Play Liberty Tuesday night. They play Friday and Saturday in Milton-Freewater at a tournament at Mac-Hi.
