Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

We are writing in support of the upcoming Dayton School District Levies. Nothing is more important than the children of our community. It is the responsibility of all adults in Dayton to ensure that its children have a safe environment and quality education. I encourage you to become informed on the aspects of this levy election.

The replacement M & O Levy is 25% of the school district budget. The state does not fully fund the education of its children. The M & O Levy provides for sports and academic teams; a part time nurse and playground supervision. This levy adds a k-12 counselor to address academic, social and emotional needs of our students. It also will help address the need for an after school program. Although this levy is an increased amount the rate will be the same or less than the current levy.

The Capital Levy requests include:

A replacement of the 4 year Technology Levy. The previous technology levy has been used to provide a solid infrastructure that supports the district technology. This levy will be used to upgrade computer labs and add wireless devices among other things.

Facility Projects The community wants the school district to repair and maintain the facilities rather than remodel or build. This portion of the levy will be used to repair roofs from the 1985 remodel and replace asphalt in the bus loading area and elementary playground. It addresses the urgent safety concerns by improving intercom and phone communication systems; repair and/or replace exterior doors and adding security cameras.

Please ask questions, share your concerns, become an informed voter and then VOTE YES for Dayton’s students. They need a safe environment in which to learn and play. Students need a school counselor to support their emotional-social needs and help them meet their academic goals to make plans for after high school. Our youth need after school sports, clubs and academic teams. Today’s learners deserve up to date technology to meet the demands of the future.
