Levies Help Students’ Success

Dear Editor,

As a former science teacher and a person who often must make difficult decisions, charts and graphs, data and statistics are something I appreciate and frequently utilize. In the case of the 2016 ballot-proposed levies however, it seems to me that all of the relevant data and statistics are already available to anyone who might have interest.

Instead, I’d like to talk about one. ONE student who is able to find a future career in welding that excites him through the chaos of his teenage years, and stops walking the road to substance abuse to become a productive member of society. ONE child who is prone to accident but is able to make it all the way through her elementary years without incident because of well-designed and well-maintained facilities. ONE graduate who has managed to leave behind a broken home of drugs and abuse and find her way to college and a bright future. ONE student who is not a natural athlete, but his involvement with 3 varsity sports keeps him away from various negative influences and moves on to a four-year university after graduating.

Although it can be difficult to see exactly how local funding affects these success stories, I would like to personally assure you that local support is the reason that we have safe facilities and enough teachers to meet the needs of our students.

As an educator, my list of ONES grows larger every year, and that is the reason I will vote “yes” for these levies.
