Newman and Norris are District Wrestling Champs

Waitsburg takes fourth at district meet

SPANGLE - Waitsburg earned fourth place at the 2B sub-regional championships at Liberty High School on Sat. Feb. 6. Tristan Newman and Carlos Norris took titles as district champs and David Lewis earned second place standing.

Former state contender Tristan Newman (285) pinned Trevin Kennedy (Col) in 41 seconds. He then won against Karl Hawks (LRS) by medical default. Tristan advances to the Regional tournament as the number one seed.

Eight graders Carlos Norris and David Lewis faced off in the 113 lb. division. Norris won by a 19-4 technical fall. Norris will compete in Regionals as the number one seed with Lewis in the number two spot.

"Not bad for our two eighth graders on the high school team," said Coach Lanny Adams.

Ky and Joe Adams both earned the number three spot for the district. Ky Adams (145) fell to Thomas Perryman (Liberty) by pin in 5:19 before beating Dane Hall (Colfax) in a 6-1 decision. He then took a rematch against Perryman in a 16-8 major decision.

Joe Adams beat Mason Payne (Reardan) in a 4-1 decision in match one but fell to Ethan Landt (Reardan) in match two in a 6-1 decision. Joe then pinned Payne in 50 seconds to earn the third place district seed.

David Just earned fourth place in the 138 lb. class. Just pinned Alex Whitman (LRS) in 1:19 and put up a good fight against Colton Kuykendall (Reardan) before being pinned in 5:20. Just won a technical fall against Dejay Lalka in round three and lost his final match against Nate Kieffer by medical default.

Dejay Lalka and Devin Newman ended their seasons at the match.

"Devin was in a tough weight class. I don't think he had a 'give me' match all season. He had to fight for every victory he received. Dejay had a lot of improvement this year. I think the highlight of his season was winning two matches by pin," said Coach Adams.

Reardan earned first place in district, with Colfax in second and Liberty taking third. "This is the highest that we have ever placed and the most wrestlers that we have had advance in a season," Adams said.

Waitsburg travels to Reardan on Saturday for the Regional tournament. The top four placers in each weight class at that meet will advance to the State tournament in the Tacoma Dome.
