Waitsburg Teams Shine at Carnival of Speed

MILTON-FREEWATER – Waitsburg junior Emily Adams took three firsts and a second, racking up 38 points to lead the Waitsburg girls to a fourth-place finish at Friday's Carnival of Speed track and field meet at Mac-Hi here. The Waitsburg boys took fifth among nearly 25 schools competing.

Waitsburg was the top finisher among Washington state schools, including Wa-Hi, in both boys' and girls' divisions.

Based on performances, Adams was named top female athlete at the meet. She won both the 1500 and 3000 meter events, as well as the triple jump. She was second in the long jump, and scored all of her team's points.

For the Cardinal boys, Landon Callas had an outstanding day in the hurdles, finishing first in the 300 meters and third in the 110.

For his second meet in a row, Travis Crockett cleared six feet in the high jump to win the event. He was also fifth in the 100 meters.

Brandon Penner was second in the discus, and Mark Montgomery beat his personal best in the shot put by two feet to place third, with a throw ¼ inch shy of 42 feet.

Cardinal coach Jeff Bartlow said he was very pleased with the progress his team is making so far this year. "Lots to smile about," he said.

For Dayton, the meet in M-F was more disappointing. After strong performances in her last two meets, senior Angela Mascall was disqualified with a false start in the 100 meter race and finished ninth in the 200 meters.

Junior Jennifer Warren finished eighth in the triple jump.

On the boys' side, Cal Martin continued to shine in the javelin, with throw of 147 feet, five inches, which was good enough for fifth place.
