Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
Cardinals Adams and Crockett to compete in four events, Callas, Montgomery in three
SPOKANE VALLEY - Local athletes had to deal with less than ideal conditions at Central Valley High School as they competed for spots in the State 2B Track & Field Championships. Waitsburg continued its strong season by sending nine of their eleven participating athletes on from regionals. Dayton also had three of their own qualify for the last meet of the season in Cheney.
Waitsburg's Emily Adams continued her stellar season with an amazing showing at the District 7/9 contest, winning the triple jump and also qualifying in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter races. "Emily Adams had a heck of a regional...ran and jumped very well," said Waitsburg coach Jeff Bartlow.
Travis Crockett also qualified in all four of his events, including a win in the high jump and strong performances in the 100 and 200 meter races, as well as anchoring Waitsburg's state bound 4x100 meter relay team that also consisted of Landon Callas, Nick Kitselman, and Joe Leamey.
Callas added a second and a first in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles respectively to compliment his relay efforts. Skylar Wood filled the fifth and final qualifying spot in the 3200 meter distance race.
Mark Montgomery kept his final season of high school track alive, as he advanced in all three throwing events (javelin, shot put, and discuss). "We have not had a kid go (to state) in all three events in a long, long time. He did it and we are really proud of him," said Bartlow.
"I could not be more proud," claimed Bartlow as he reflected on his team's weekend performance.
Dayton, which also sent many athletes to the regional meet, saw three of their own place well enough to earn a bid to state.
Cal Martin finished second in the javelin to punch his ticket for Cheney. Alexus Wanlarbkam took fourth place in the 110 meter hurdles, ensuring her a spot at the state meet. Neylan Bryan rounds out the Dayton qualifiers by placing fourth in the 400 meter running event. "I'm pleased, but certainly not surprised that these athletes are going on," said Dayton coach Dan Nechodom.
The State 2B Track & Field Championships will be held May 26th through the 28th at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
