Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
Food drives brings in nearly 1,000 lbs. of food
WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg Leos and Lions Clubs joined together to collect 868 pounds of food for the Waitsburg Resource Center last week. The Resource Center donates approximately 7,000 lbs. of food to families in need each year.
The food drive was organized as a competition between high school classes, with the seniors taking home the win by collecting 347 lbs. of non-perishables. The junior class came in second with 267 lbs. followed by the sophomores with 134 lbs. and freshmen with 130 lbs.
Students canvassed the town in teams to collect food, and members of the Lions Club followed them with vehicles. After the food was delivered, Lions members treated the students to a hamburger dinner at the Lions building.
In addition to providing food to families in need, the Waitsburg Resource Center supplies snacks for the summer reading program, provides meals and activities for students during winter school break, and meets the needs of high school students through a backpack program.
The WRC has also sponsored a summer activity program, provided free bicycle helmets to children, sponsored mobile dental van visits, and school visits from dental hygienists.
Most recently, the WRC committed to funding weekend meals to needy elementary students through Second Harvest's "Bite 2 Go" program. Fourteen students are currently participating in that program.
The WRC is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization and is supported through donations. Financial and food donations are always welcome and can be delivered during regular center hours.
The WRC is located at 106 Preston Ave. (on the side of the Banner Bank building) and is open Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. and Thursdays from 2-4 p.m. The WRC serves families in the Waitsburg and Prescott school districts.
