Twenty three members of the Waitsburg High School Class of 2007 are set to participate in commencement exercises on June 8. Valedictorian of the class is Danielle Coila, daughter of Gloria and Richard Lybecker, Waitsburg, and Curtis Coila, Waitsburg. Co-salutatorians are Melissia Sharpe, daughter of Susie Sharpe of Walla Walla, and Jeremy Nichols, son of Jeff and Dawn Nichols of Waitsburg. Honor speaker will be Courtney Gritman, daughter of Fred Gritman and Jamie Young, Waitsburg, and Carla Rowe of Dayton.

May 28, 1992

Ken Cole of Waitsburg was presented with a plaque and named “Lion of the Year” by outgoing president Glen Smith Tuesday night. Smith said Cole has worked hard for Lions this year, and was in charge of the needed storage facility at the track which was one major project this past year.

Michelle L. Long became acting marshal of Waitsburg Wednesday, May 27, after being appointed by the City Council last week. Long, 29, joined the office as a reserve deputy in 1985, is expected to succeed Marshal Tom Longo who resigned to attend law school in Virginia.

Marshal’s Memos: Waitsburg resident reports husband left home with $80 on May 18 and she hasn’t seen him since. (Husband returned home on May 22.) On-going problem of Dayton family not returning books to Waitsburg library. Marshal called family to ask that books be returned by June 1.

Fifty Years Ago

May 25, 1967

Leading the Days of Real Sport Parade will be Parade Marshal Harold Meinberg of Waitsburg.

Plans for Starbuck’s first new school in many years were reviewed at a special meeting of the school board Monday night. The growing Snake River community of about 600 people, will replace a school constructed in the 1900s with a new, modern building.

Graduation exercises for the eighth grade class of the Waitsburg Elementary School will be held in the high school auditorium Wednesday evening May 31 at 8 p.m. Randy Pearson will play the processional with Rev. Jack Wylie giving the invocation and benediction. Jo-Ellen Watson will give the welcome for the class. Class speeches will be given by Jeannie Pearson and Judy Harper. Howard Smith will give the class history. A clarinet duet will be played by Christine Chapman and Judy Harper; Jeannie Pearson will play a piano solo. The diplomas will be presented by Stanley Pierson, member of the Board of Education.

May 29, 1942

Andrew Weir was elected the Student Body president for the 1942-43 it was announced following elections. Dorne Hall will be vice president; Betty Weir, secretary; Clora Jean Eaton, treasurer; Lloyd Beckley, boys cheer leadr; Elizabeth Ann Danielson, girls cheer leader and Elizabeth Sutton, Cardinal editor.

Torrents of rain shattering a fifty year record raged through the Touchet Valley Friday and Sunday of this week bringing unestimated loss to the local farmers around Waitsburg.

Members of the DeNova Club closed their social season for the year when they entertained their sister sponsors, the Sorotus Club, at one of the most enjoyable teas of the year.

One Hundred Years Ago

June 1, 1917

Miss Clara Philips and Dr. Amos Ambrose of Vandergrift, Pa. were quietly married at the Philips home at Prescott Thursday, May 24 at 12:30. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. Money, pastor of the Federated Church of that city.

Willis Hales came up from Pasco Tuesday and is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Hales for a couple of days. Willis tells us that the new Pasco Union Stock Yards will be open for business on and after June 25th, 1917.

Some complaint has been made at this office from residents along Second Street regarding the driving of cows to and from pasture in the Dickinson grove.

Miss Julie Ramseur has accepted a position as bookkeeper at the John Smith Hardware store.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 3, 1892

Overcoats were in demand the first and second of June, 1892. Paste this on the wall for future reference.

Born in this city June 2, 1892 to W. S. Guntle and wife, a daughter.

Report of school taught in District 23, Columbia Co. for the term ending May 27, 1892. Number of pupils enrolled 16. Average daily attendance 8. Pupils averaging 90 or over in deportment are Johnney, Walter, Manueal and Antone Sweazy. Pupils averaging between 80 and 90 are Ollie, Osta and Janie Hamilton, Gertie and Nellie Hawks, Willie Harris, James Peterson. Manueal Sweazy stood the highest in deportment and examination, standing 99 in deportment and 93 in examination. Louis Kruchek, teacher.
