Dayton SHEO Students Win Impact Award

Are a catalyst for other communities to develop training programs

GRAND MOUND, Wash. – Dayton High School SHEO (Students Helping Each Other) team was awarded the Impact Award from the Spring Youth Forum for spreading awareness and providing training about ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and Resilience at Great Wolf Lodge on May 17. The students competed against 49 teams from across the state.

The Impact Award is given to recognize leadership in implementing the team project reaching the largest audience and making the biggest difference in the community against substance abuse and destructive behaviors.

Since April 2016, SHEO has made presentations on ACEs and Resilience research and/or facilitated playing the ACEs-Resilience Games to educate youth and adults in Dayton, Walla Walla, Yakima, Bremerton, and Olympia.

SHEO was the first youth group to train other youth on the topic when they presented at the Prevention Summit in Yakima. As a result of their training and mentoring, at least two other communities are developing their own youth training programs on Aces and Resilience, according to SHEO Advisor Peggy Gutierrez.

To date, Dayton High School SHEO has trained more than 500 students. Learn more about ACEs and Resilience at http://www.resiliencetrumpsaces.org.
