Landon Callas wins 300 hurdles; Emily Adams takes first in 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races
CHENEY – Waitsburg senior Emily Adams dominated the long-distance events at the state 1B tournament here on Friday and Saturday. Adams won state titles in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter races, and took third in the triple jump.
On Friday Adams won the 1,600 easily, setting a new personal record of 5:20.32. On Saturday, Adams took an early lead in the 3,200 and kept putting distance on the rest of the field, beating her nearest competitor by a full minute. Adams shattered the existing 1B state record of 11:42 with a time of 11:28.51. Less than three hours later she ran the 800 meters and set another state meet record with a time of 2:20.16. Adams then placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 33-0.
In the 3,200, Adams broke a longtime Waitsburg High School record, held by Kelly (Branson) Zuger since the early 1980s.
Landon Callas was successful in the 300 meter hurdles, becoming the state champion and setting a new state meet record with a time of 39.85. Callas also took fifth in the 110 hurdles, after hitting the second-to-last hurdle, stumbling and then regaining his balance. Callas took seventh place in the 100-meter dash.
The boys 4x400 relay team, consisting of Andre Potts, Joe Leamy, TJ Morrison and Callas, placed seventh, with a time of 3:45.
Kailynn Lewis competed in the 100 hurdles, but was just outside the qualifying time to advance to the finals. Kirsten Miller was just shy of advancing in the 300 hurdles.
The 4X100 team of Clarissa Espana, Kenn Gallee, Kirsten Miller and Kailyn Lewis were just shy of advancing to the finals. Gallee made Waitsburg school history by being the first foreign exchange student to compete in a state competition.
"Overall, Coaches Ann Adams and Nic Carpenter and I were and still are very happy with the outcome of all of our athletes," said Coach Lanny Adams after the meet.
