Team ends successful season with loss to Onalaska for 22-8 final record
YAKIMA – The Dayton-Waitsburg softball team played two games each, Friday and Saturday, at the state tournament here, ending their season with a 11-4 loss to Onalaska Saturday afternoon. They were 2-2 at the state tourney and finished the season 22-8.
In the first game, Friday morning, DW got shut out by a tough Adna team, 11-0, in six innings. DW had only three hits in the game, including two by Heidi Dobbs and one by Ariel Sandau. Pitcher Megan Robins gave up 14 hits. DW also committed four errors.
DW bounced back against Lind-Ritzville-Sprague Friday evening, with an overwhelming 18-2 win in the loser-out game. In that game, Sandau, Dobbs and Tatumn Laughery each had three hits, while the team was errorless. Robins gave up eight LRS hits.
In the third game, Saturday morning, DW fought to a 5-2 win over Colfax, overcoming four errors in the game. Hanna Becker, Scully Castorena, Robins, Sandau and Dobbs each had two hits, out of the team’s 11 total. Robins again pitched a good game, giving up eight hits.
DW hit a wall against Onalaska Saturday afternoon, losing 11-4 and ending their tournament. The team went ahead 2-0 in the first inning, but Colfax came back with six runs in the second and third to put the game away.
DW racked up ten hits and committed only one error, but it wasn’t enough. Becker, Robins and Sadie Seney each had two hits. Pitchers Castorena, Seney and Robins combined to give up 12 hits.
“DW state tournament team was led by its seniors, with the seniors in Dayton playing in the state tournament every year they were in High School,” said DW assistant Troy Larsen.”
Seniors playing their final games for DW were Hana Becker, Heidi Dobbs, Megan Robins, Arial Sandau and Deja Williams.
