Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
Grace Coulston, 17, has become a veteran raising and showing Boer Goats
WALLA WALLA-Waitsburg's own Grace Coulston won grand champion at the Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days held Aug 29-Sept 2. The winning goat, Grace's Red Princess is an example of a Boer Goat's stout frame.
Coulston says working with the goats is fun, but her favorite part of showing livestock at the Fair is "all the people I get to meet and how much everyone's supported me in my passion. And how nice everyone has been."
Coulston discovered raising livestock with the encouragement of a family friend. "I got a gift goat from a family friend who is in the show circuit I am in now, and she made this deal where if I got a pregnant goat from her I would give her the kid back and I got to keep the goat. Now me, being a 5-year-old, thought that was the best deal ever and ever. Since I created a bond with that goat it just sort of took off from there."
Now 17, Coulston is a well-established veteran on the livestock circuit. She's gained recognition at the Rodeo City Classic, in Ellensburg, and serves on the Junior American Boer Goat Association board.
Upon the Fair's conclusion a great many goats are sold. But Coulston has a growing herd of 30-40 goats to keep her busy.
